about

The production duo Messengers was formed back in the summer of 2001 in a recording studio at the legendary Saga Centre, home of the broken beat in West London.

Darren Moss and Kev Beadle first met in 1996 when Kev was running his Clean Up Records label and signed Essen – a band formed by Darren with his then production partner Paul DaCosta, releasing their debut LP ‘King Size Blues’ in 1998.

The initial idea behind Messengers was Kev raiding his vast music collection and pulling out some of his favourite tracks from various genres, and between Darren and himself sampling the best elements creating something more contemporary for the dancefloor.

So for the next 10 years, when time allowed, they would pull all-nighters in Darren’s Ram’s Red Son studio and put a collection of tracks together utilizing Kev’s original soul, jazz and latin musical background with Darren’s alternative electronic dance musical tastes and production skills with some additional live musical and vocal flavours courtesy of Tim Hutton (Soul Ascendants/ Prodigy/Dub Pistols) and Camelle Hinds (Central Line).

Though they released several well received 12" remixes and re-edits through Goya Distribution they never released the album nor made the project available for download until now.

DJ, radio presenter, compiler and record collector Kev Beadle has travelled the world since the early 90’s playing his unique mix of jazz, latin, soul, funk and beats as one the most respected tastemakers and DJs in his field and holding down quite a few residencies in various London venues for a number of years.

His popular radio shows started back in the 80’s with the pirates (Starpoint and K-Jazz) right through to his weekly show on internet soul station Solar Radio and various guest slots (WorldwideFM/Kiss/StompFM) created a massive worldwide following before he decided to hang up the headphones (for a bit) back in 2016.

Two years on and he has decided to make a selective return to playing out again on both radio and in the clubs and continues his love of collecting rare vinyl and putting together compilations (Private Collection/Best Of Inner City Records) for the BBE label that sit nicely alongside the rest of his discography of compilations for the Blue Note label (Capitol Rare series) and Charly Records (Argo/Cadet Grooves series) that he first started to compile back in 1991.

Artist, musician, writer, producer Darren Moss grew up in London with party parents and was naturally heavily influenced by the diverse and eclectic club scenes of the late 70's early 80's where punk revolutionary fashion and music were synonymous with the creative expression of a new disaffected generation.

From disco and p-funk at Hombre, Le Beat Route and Le Kilt in Soho to new hip hop electro with Agent Orange at Titanic and the entire new wave electronic movement seeming to culminate at Camden Palace with the new romantics. Fascinated with electronics and the dance music of the future he channeled his creativity into making tunes. Experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines programming electronic beats recorded on the first affordable 4-tracks and started producing electronic dance music with various artists and projects to the present day.

In 2000 Darren started producing several projects on his own label RRS Records. After one of the potential Messenger LP tracks 'Menina' was spotted and a version was commissioned by Ian Brown from the Stone Roses for his track 'Kiss Ya Lips (No I.D)' which appeared on his 2004 LP ‘Solarized', after which Darren then went on to write and produce Ian’s top 20 hit "All Ablaze" in 2005.

This proved to be the springboard for Darren and his new politically driven breakbeat project EMBED working with UK rappers Kapulet and Loki and the Embed collective. (embedmusic.co.uk) After supporting Ian Brown on his 2007/2009 UK tours Embed released the critically acclaimed debut album 'Sonic Weapons' in 2009.

In 2012 Embed released the video single 'Shame' featuring long time friends Shea Seger vocals and beats master Yuval Gabay (Soul Coughin, Reprazent). The video was well received and prompted the follow up track and subsequent video for 'Gently'. This song was the turning point for Darren Shea and Yuval, as the concept of WE ARE SYD the band was initially conceived and subsequently born the following year.

The album was eventually finished but due to many unforeseen complications is only now being released in 2018.
